Plan of Study Checklist:
Before submitting your Plan of Study for review please run it through this checklist.
1) Check your require courses
ETM 5111 and ETM 5121/ ETM 5132 or ETM 5110(5133) are the only courses required of all students in the program (4 hours total). ETM 5111 is typically taken at the earliest opportunity in the program (usually the 1st semester). Beginning Fall 2009 ETM 5110 (5133) will be offered as a replacement to the previously-required ETM 5121/ ETM 5132 sequence. ETM 5110(5133) will be offered every semester but should be taken as close to the end of your program as possible – ideally during the last semester.
2) Final Semester
The graduate college requires all graduating students to be enrolled in at least 2 credit hours during the semester in which they plan to graduate. If for some reason you are unable to complete your classes and end up with an “incomplete” during the semester you were planning to graduate, it may be necessary for you to enroll in an additional 2 hours of coursework. To avoid this issue, ensure that all coursework is complete and no “I”s exist on your transcript. If you include a course on your plan of study in which you have an “I” you will not be cleared for graduation.
3) Continuous Enrollment
The OSU catalog reads:
“A graduate student must maintain continuous enrollment…Continuous enrollment can be met with six credit hours during each 12 month period or 2 credit hours in each of the fall, summer and spring semesters.”
Clarification: The six-credit-hour rule does not apply to "Creative Component" students.
The bottom line...To make a good progress we encourage you to enroll in at least 6 hours per year but it is not required.
4) 10 year rule
The OSU catalog reads:
"Courses taken more than 10 years prior to actual graduation will not be accepted on a plan of study without a formal request from the advisory committee and approval of the Graduate Faculty Council."
Clarification: Transfer credits older taken more than 10 years prior to the beginning of the semester you graduate will not be accepted on a plan of study.
The bottom line... Example: If you are graduating in Spring 2010 (May) the oldest course you could transfer in would be one that started in June 2000.
5) Time Limit
The OSU catalog reads:
“Students are expected to complete the requirements for the master’s degree within seven years from first enrollment after admission to the Master’s degree program.”
Clarification:
This means that students have 21 consecutive semesters in which to complete the degree requirements (32 hours in the case of MSETM). Each year contains three semesters: Spring, Summer and Fall. For example if a student is admitted to the program in Fall 1999 he/she must complete all requirements by the end of the Summer 2004 semester.
