Professional Development Certificate in
Engineering and Technology Management

A certificate in Engineering and Technology Management provides graduate-level technical management knowledge to professional engineers and scientists.  In today’s competitive work environment technical expertise may not be enough to prepare professionals for leadership roles. This program equips individuals with the knowledge and tools necessary to successfully manage people, projects, and processes while keeping in mind overall corporate strategy. Completion of the certificate program will provide skills enhancement, exposure to current concepts and issues, and a foundation on which to build a technical management career.

Overview

The OSU Certificate in Engineering Management offers its participants the flexibility to tailor a career enhancing program that will complement their educational background.

For the Individual

A student who completes one required course plus eleven elective courses from the list below with an overall GPA of 3.0 or greater will receive a certificate issued by OSU and a notation on their official transcript indicating the successful completion of the program.  If the choice is made to then pursue a full Master of Science Degree in Engineering and Technology Management, all credit hours earned will transfer into that degree program.

For the Company

Company leadership may select courses as part of a company sponsored certificate program.  Participants must meet the usual standards for admission.  The number of credit hours required may vary depending on the companies needs.  Upon completion of the prescribed program participants will receive a certificate of completion from their company and a transcript indicating completion of graduate level course work.

Admission

Students interested in pursuing an ETM certification must follow the same admission procedures required of degree seeking students. The four elements required in the admission package are:

  • An OSU Application for Graduate Admission form.
  • An Engineering and Technology Management application form.
  • An official copy of undergraduate transcripts.
  • $40.00 application fee. (or $25 for students already admitted to the MSETM program)

The certificate can be granted at any time during a student's pursuit of the M.S. degree or as a stand-alone effort. Students who decide to pursue a Master of Science degree during or after completion of the certificate program can transfer all ETM certificate courses into their master's degree plan. All degree-seeking MSETM students are encouraged to apply for the ETM certification program. Admission to both programs is common and does not affect a student's status in either.

Sequence

The courses may be taken in any order; however it is recommended that students complete ETM 5111 at their first opportunity. A student may start the certificate program at any time after admission is granted and register for courses at a pace that they find suitable. Students enrolled in this program must complete all requirements within a seven year time limit.

Schedules

Course schedules are made available on the OSU Engineering Distance Education website typically 2-3 months prior to the beginning of class.  Courses are typically offered in 5-week time frames but the format may vary.

The Curriculum requirements for the certificate are as follows:

FAQs

1) What are the benefits of receiving a Graduate Certificate in ETM?

The OSU ETM certificate is a graduate-level credential reflecting knowledge of the discipline of engineering management.  It provides:

  • Documented participation in a focused program and coursework with the same rigor as a graduate level degree
  • The opportunity to expand the participants management skills and/or complement your B.S. field of study with management education
  • Participation in an academic community of faculty and students with a common interest
  • A ladder path to the MSETM degree (all twelve hours can be used toward degree)
  • Demonstrated progress towards the M.S. degree that your employer can see
  •  A printed certificate and record in your transcript from the OSU Graduate School to document successful completion

2) Do I have to choose one program or the other?

No. Students may matriculate through both programs (Cert and MS degree) simultaneously.

In fact, that is what we prefer. When the requirements of the certificate are met the student may

request that their efforts be noted and a certificate will be issued. All credit hours earned for the

certificate can then be counted towards the M.S. graduation requirements.

3) How will this benefit the ETM program and future students?

Establishing a demand for certificates will help us expand into new subject areas. For

example, future certificates in ‘Lean/Sigma’ , ‘Legal Issues’ or other topics may be offered

if demand can be demonstrated.  Your participation in this program may help ensure that

future ETM students have similar opportunities.
